Barking dogs in your neighborhood? The Idaho Humane Society has tips for you!

Many neighbors experience late night dog barking or just barking that disturbs the peace. What do you do if the barking becomes excessive?

The Idaho Humane society says if it's a problem, simply talk to your neighbor about the barking dog.

"Often times they're at work and they don't know that their dog is barking excessively," said Kristine Schellhaas with the Idaho Humane Society.

CBS2 reporter Alexis Goree talked to a woman who goes on a daily stroll in her neighborhood, where she see's many dogs.

"If it was someone else's dog that barked at me and barked at me until I couldn't stand it I would knock on their door and ask them if there was anything I could do differently or they could do differently to decrease the problem," said Luanne Hudspeth, Meridian neighbor.

If the neighbor doesn't take care of it and it becomes an ongoing problem. You have the option to call the humane society.

"Unfortunately, it cannot be done anonymously. So, we will take your information and we will take a warning to the neighbor and let them know that you have cited a complaint against the dog," Schellhaas said.

But, Schellhaas says you only get one get out of jail free card per year. A barking dog that is disturbing your neighbors sleep can cost you another citation.

"We always ask that people get video proof because what's going to happen is, it is a civil issue and they can take them to court and then a judge will look at the evidence and weigh in," Schellhaas said.

For complaints that do go to court, Schellhaas says excessive barking is a misdemeanor and the judge could fine you up to 300 dollars.

"Or they can even take your animal away from you. Depending on how severe the complaint is and your actions you have taken to it," Schellhaas said.
