Homeowners Insurance Coverage

Learn about your options when it comes to homeowners insurance.

What's covered by homeowners insurance

Homeowners insurance helps protect more than just your home. It covers your stuff and helps protect your finances from unexpected and costly events. If you own and live in your house, you can benefit from homeowners insurance.

Coverage to help protect your property See note 1

Since your home is one of the largest investments you'll ever make, having the right coverage is important. These coverages are automatic with all USAA Homeowners Insurance policies.

Dwelling

Your dwelling limit is the maximum amount we'll pay to rebuild your home if it's destroyed by a covered event. Covered events can include things like fire, theft and most weather-related events.

Other Structures

This helps cover damage to things like fences, detached garages, storage sheds, swimming pools and driveways.

Personal Property

This helps cover your furniture, clothes, electronics and other things you own. It could also cover your stuff if it gets damaged in storage or while you travel. If you'd like more protection for your valuables, think about adding Valuable Personal Property insurance.

Home Sharing Coverage See note 2

This increases coverage limits for personal liability and your belongings when you share, exchange or rent your home short-term. If you rent your home to long-term tenants, you may need rental property insurance, also known as landlord insurance.

Coverage to help protect your finances See note 1

In addition to helping protect your belongings, homeowners insurance helps protect you financially if you face a lawsuit or other unexpected expense following a covered loss.

Personal Liability

If you're at fault for someone's injury or damage to their property, homeowners coverage may protect you and cover your legal costs. For added coverage, consider umbrella insurance. It can help cover claims after you've reached your homeowners policy limit.

Medical Payments to Others

Costs for things like X-rays or ER visits for people injured on your property can add up. This helps cover their injuries no matter who's at fault, as well as anyone you accidentally may injure while you're away from your property.

Loss of Use

If a covered event leaves your home unlivable, this helps pay for temporary housing and increased expenses. It includes costs for things like hotel stays or apartment rent, food, laundry, moving and pet boarding. Learn more about loss of use coverage.

Loss Assessment

If shared property like a community clubhouse gets damaged, your homeowners association may require you to help pay for repairs. This coverage could help pay your part of the repair bill.

Identity Theft See note 3

Our standard policy includes up to $5,000 of identity theft coverage, which can help pay for services you may need to recover your identity. For even more protection, you can go through the USAA Insurance Agency to get personal cyber insurance.

Replacement cost coverage for your things

Your policy covers your belongings and some of your home's building materials at current value with no depreciation. See note 4 That means, if your stuff gets damaged in a covered event, we'll pay the cost to repair it, or we may replace it with a new item valued up to your policy limits. You just pay your deductible.

Special coverage for military

Active-duty and active reserve members can save with military-specific coverage. You won't pay a deductible on a covered loss for personally owned military gear and clothing. This can include uniforms, insignia, flight cases, headsets and body armor. See note 5

Protection against wildfires

The USAA Wildfire Response program could help protect your home from active wildfires if you live in a state covered by the program and have an active USAA Homeowners or Rental Property Insurance policy. Our providers monitor for threats and send certified firefighters to help prevent losses.

We'll automatically enroll you at no extra cost if your home is located in one of these designated areas and is an eligible type of dwelling.

Other coverage options to consider See note 1

Home Protector

This coverage offers 25% See note 6 more toward your coverage limits for dwelling and other structures in certain situations. For example, if a covered loss is more than your limit due to an increase in building costs, Home Protector may apply.

Water Backup

This covers damage caused by water or sewage that backs up through the plumbing from outside the home. It also covers damage from water that overflows from a sump pump or sump well designed to drain water from the interior foundation.

Earthquake

This helps to protect your home and your things when they're damaged by an earthquake, shock wave or tremor. See note 7

Personal Injury

If you're accused of damaging someone's reputation with libel, slander, defamation of character or other harmful actions, personal injury protection can help.

Electronics coverage

A USAA Technology Coverage Endorsement can offer protection beyond the standard policy for items like personal computers, tablets, mobile phones, wearable tech, gaming systems and TVs. See note 8
